A friend of the ironworkers and of Local 97, George Angelomatis (1947-2013) worked on permit during the summers while attending UBC, notably for Reliable Reinforcing, a signatory contractor. George was often described as the heart of the boxing scene in Vancouver during the golden days of the sport. He coached at the Eagle Boxing Club in North Vancouver, before lending his talents to the Astoria Boxing Club in the 1980s, one of the premier boxing clubs in Canada.

George subsequently served as an attorney, and later, a judge in the British Columbia Provincial Courts. He never forgot his working class roots as he practiced criminal law and litigation in Gastown, serving a working class clientele. Always sensitive to clients who suffered from financial hardship, George rarely asked for a retainer and for those who could not afford his services,

astorialogo_final_navyolLaurence Baker, long-time member and dispatcher for Local 97, was an assistant coach and trustee of the boxing club. Laurence and another Club trustee were pleased to fulfill George and the Angelomatis family’s wishes to set up The Astoria Boxing Club, George Angelomatis Memorial Bursary to aid youth in the trades at BCIT.

This fall, eight students who were struggling financially have received support from the bursary to pursue training in pipe-fitting, welding, metal fabrication, joinery/cabinetmaker, nautical sciences and marine engineering. Local 97 wishes all the recipients well on their journey to a successful trade career!
